City of Oakland Suing Oakland Raiders if Team Leaves EarlyIf you recall, the NFL owners voted 31-1 to approve the Raiders move from Oakland to Las Vegas, CelebNSport247.com previously reported.

The Raiders agreed to continue to play in the East Bay for two more seasons while their stadium was being built.

It seems that may not be the case now.

San Francisco Chronicle reports:

The Oakland City Council has authorized a multimillion-dollar, antitrust lawsuit against the NFL and the Raiders over the team’s impending move to Las Vegas — legal action that Coliseum officials said could result in the team leaving Oakland at the end of the upcoming season.

Oakland is basically seeking damages for the departing franchise, with the attorney expecting somewhere in the realm of $500 million. At the same time, the Raiders are still trying to work out a lease agreement for the remainder of the time they have left in Oakland.

That impending lawsuit has complicated matters immensely.

McKibben said Tuesday:

According to Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority Executive Director Scott McKibben, who has been working to finalize the Raiders’ latest lease extension, team executives warned him that they won’t sign any agreement if the lawsuit is filed.

They told me we might as well take the contract and rip it up. The Raiders, who did not return our call seeking comment, are under a year-to-year lease with the Coliseum Authority.

As of right, it’s not clear if the team will even be playing in Oakland in 2019.
