Cocaine + Alcohol Found in Jose Fernandez Blood

The Cuban-born star athlete Jose Fernandez was apparently partying at the time of the crash, and get this, Jose’s BAC was .147, approaching twice the legal limit!

The Miami Herald reports:

Fernandez, 24, suffered blunt-force injuries to the head and torso, as well as skull and jaw fractures when his boat hit a jetty near Miami Beach. The Medical Examiner’s office listed the cause of death as “boat crash.”

The bodies of Fernandez and two friends, Emilio Jesus Macias and Eduardo Rivero, were discovered later that morning.

Authorities have not determined who was piloting the boat, which Fernandez owned, at the time of the crash. Autopsies revealed that Macias and Rivero both had levels of alcohol below the legal limit in Florida, which is .08. However, Rivero also had traces of cocaine in his system. Authorities also are conducting a homicide investigation.

It’s a bit shocking since he was playing for the Miami Marlins. This might make the MLB do more random drug testing since he was killed in the boat crash with his friends?

Last month, he was involved in a boat crash that killed his two friends, along with the famed pitcher.

TMZ reports:

According to the Miami-Dade Coroner’s Office. Cocaine was detected in his system as well. Fernandez’s friends both had small amounts of alcohol in their system … one also had cocaine.

All three men were partying at a local bar two hours prior to the crash. The bar has a dock for boaters to pull up and get serviced.

It’s still unknown who was the one who was driving the boat at the time of the crash.

It’s a sad situation, but it goes to show you that when drinking and doing cocaine you should NOT drive anything on land or water.
