CelebNSports247.com reports that Alex Oliveira was injured by grenade fragments in Christmas eve incident in Brazil.

The UFC Welterweight Alex Oliveira went home to Tres Rios, south of Rio de Janeiro, to spend Christmas with family. The crazy thing is that he almost didn’t make it home because an altercation broke out at a gas station that involved machetes and guns and an exploding grenade that was thrown his way.

Alex ended up with a handful of shrapnel lodged in his lower leg, requiring surgery. The good thing is that Oliveira survived.

Oliveira recently spoke to TV Rio Sul about the terrible incident.

Alex said:

It was a good night, you know? But there are a lot of people in our family who do not like to enjoy Christmas. I went out to feed my mother’s car, and on the way I saw my aunt in confusion. I told my aunt not to interfere, I just stopped to try to ease the stop. Because when you have a fighter involved in confusion, you know, right? One guy already got a gun in my nephew’s face. Then began a push-push. The guys were with a machete, a knife, a grenade. And they threw the grenade at me. He flew fragments on my leg, on my foot.

He added:

One guy came up and pointed a gun at my nephew’s face, and that’s when people started pushing each other. They had machetes, knives, a grenade. They threw a grenade in my direction. Fragments flew to my leg and my foot.

Alex Oliveira was taken to a local hospital where he underwent a small surgery on his leg to remove the grenade fragments. He went to police later that day to help officers understand what happened.
