Following the news on Monday when JR Smith gave an interview to The Athletic where he essentially accused the Cavs of tanking.

After the interview, it was reported that JR had left the team and is looking for a new home elsewhere. It was said that the split was amicable between the Cavs organization and Smith.

Smith publicly expressed his desire for a trade earlier this season, and on Monday.

He explained some of the reasoning behind that to The Athletic:

I don’t think the goal is to win. The goal isn’t to go out there and try to get as many wins as you can. I think the goal is to develop and lose to get lottery picks. I think that was always the plan.

The Cleveland Cavaliers coach Larry Drew is now responding to Smith’s public comments accusing the team of tanking.

Drew said that his team was “playing hard” and had no quit in them, per Kyle Goon of Southern California News Group.

Cavs coach Larry Drew says of JR Smith’s insinuations that the team is tanking: “They’re playing hard. They don’t have any quit in them.”

Drew said prior to Wednesday’s game against the Lakers:

Am I coaching to win? Well I’m not coaching to lose. I don’t put my time in to put guys out there to lose. I’ve never done that and I never will do that. I don’t know how to do that.
