CelebNSports247.com reports that Dolphins coach Brian Flores had this to say, via Cameron Wolfe of ESPN:
He’s had a good camp. He’s been competitive. He’s shown a lot of improvement. If he had to go in and play, that’s how it’d be. Now a rookie playing early on, we may have that at some other positions and if that were the case, then that’s what it would be.
According to reports, Tagovailoa would need to start the campaign as Miami’s No. 2 despite receiving a clean bill of health from his hip injury.
This comes after limited training camps and virtual offseason workouts.
This puts the veteran baller Fitzpatrick in the starter position for the Dolphins last season after beating out the recently released Josh Rosen in training camp. The 37-year-old ultimately made 13 starts, with Miami briefly turning to Rosen for three games before returning to the veteran.
The Arizona native led the Dolphins to all five of their wins, including a dramatic last-second victory against New England in the regular-season finale.
Fitzpatrick finished last season with 3,529 passing yards (the third-best mark of his career) and 20 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.
Let’s not forget that Tua Tagovailoa has been healthy and received positive reviews for his efforts. Flores also had praise for Tagovailoa and said it would be OK if the rookie had to play at some point.
So the era of Tagovailoa is on pause for now.
