Former NFL player dies in a horrific crash that also left one other person dead.

NFL player dies in crash in Austin, Texas. Cedric Benson was killed in a motorcycle accident Saturday night. The famed Texas Longhorn was crossing through an intersection when his motorcycle crashed into a minivan, according to the police. Both Benson and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

CelebNSports247.com reports that Benson stood out during his time at the University of Texas and rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons there.

The Texas native is the 9th-leading rusher in college football history, with 5,540 yards and holds the record for second most touchdowns (64) in school history.

Benson was the recipient of the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top running back, after rushing for 1,834 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2004. He also earned All-American honors.

The University of Texas football team tweeted:

Very sad day with the passing of Longhorn Legend Cedric Benson. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and our community of lettermen. He will be missed.

Benson’s football career continued in the NFL. The 227 lb. running back played eight years in the league. He was the fourth overall pick after the Chicago Bears drafted him in 2005.

The Chicago Bears tweeted Sunday:

Our condolences to the friends and family of former Bears running back Cedric Benson, our 4th overall Draft pick in 2005 and member of the 2006 NFC Champions team.

Benson also played for the Green Bay Packers and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengals President Mike Brown said:

Cedric was a fine football player for us. Our organization is deeply saddened by his sudden and tragic passing. The Bengals extend our deepest condolences to Cedric’s family.

Former Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson also spoke of Benson’s passing.

Once he bought into our system, he was like a flower. He just blossomed,” Anderson said. “He gave us an element we didn’t have. We had complementary guys, but Cedric gave us a missing element. He was a good man. He was one of my guys and it hurts. Life is too short.

Benson was 36 years old.
