De La Hoya says that everything is practically a done deal with only one missing piece, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has yet to sign the agreement.
Before this fight is a go, both fighters are required to make a mandatory win against their upcoming battles first, per Oscar De La Hoya.
Golovkin must beat Daniel Jacobs on March 18th from New York’s Madison Square Garden. While Canelo must take on countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and win on May 6th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. As far as the deal, De la Hoya and Canelo have placed it on the table, but it’s up to Golovkin to accept the terms.

De La Hoya told Sports Illustrated:
“The fight is there. It’s only going to take for Golovkin to accept the deal that we have on the table. It’s the most lucrative deal that he’s ever had. So, the fight is there, but first thing is first. Look, there cannot be a Golovkin fight because you never know what is going to happen on May 6th. This is a fight with Chavez that is dangerous and tough.”
Oscar De La Hoya goes on to say:
“Like Canelo said, the [Golovkin fight] offer is there. It’s not on us, it’s not on Canelo – it’s on Golovkin. It’s always been there [in Golovkin’s court]. Canelo doesn’t run from anybody. He wants to fight the very best. What fighter have you heard of, at 26 years old, has already fought the likes of Lara and Trout and Mayweather and is going to fight Chavez and fought Khan, and the list goes on and on with Cotto and Mosley. He’s fought everybody in his time. At 25-years-old and 26-years-old, he was fighting the best. Not even myself or the great Julio Cesar Chavez [was doing that at his age]. Obviously when you have a great fighter like Canelo, you want him to face the very best and that’s what he’s going to do.”
