Tigers Pitcher E-Rod Agrees to 5-Year Deal!
The Detroit Tigers has done the first major free-agent deal of this offseason setting the tone for the MLB…
CelebnSports247.cm reports that Detroit agreed to terms with former Red Sox left-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez on a five-year contract worth at least $77 million, a source told MLB.com on Monday.
The Tigers have set for what is expected to be a busy stretch as they move out of their rebuilding phase and toward contention. They have kicked it off with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.
Rodriguez’ deal includes an opt-out for Rodriguez after the second season, as well as incentives worth an additional $3 million. Though, the club has not confirmed the deal, as is its practice when a contract agreement is pending a physical.
Eduardo Rodriguez, 28, went 13-8 with a 4.74 ERA last season with the Red Sox after missing all of 2020 because of coronavirus-related myocarditis.
Rodriguez was Boston’s best starter in 2019, finishing sixth in the American League Cy Young voting and posting a 19-6 record with a 3.81 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 34 starts.
The Red Sox extended a one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to Rodriguez earlier this month. By signing Rodriguez, the Tigers will give up their third-highest selection in next year’s MLB Draft.
Though shortstop has been the headline target in Detroit since before the season ended, general manager Al Avila noted starting pitcher as just as big of a need.
In addition to E-Rod, earlier this month the Tigers acquired veteran Gold Glove catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infield prospect Nick Quintana.
The Athletic first reported Monday that Rodriguez and the Tigers had finalized a deal.
